Jordan is involved in the Israel-Iran conflict. Surprisingly, they stand by Israel. Iran’s drone attack has also been resisted by Jordanian forces. But why? The Jordanian government strongly criticized the Netanyahu government when Israel attacked Gaza. Now they are resisting Iranian drones for Israel!
In an official statement, Jordan said it countered the Iranian drone in self-defense. Not to help Israel. King Abdullah II of Jordan supported Palestine. But Iran’s ally did not intervene in Israel’s war with Hamas. The international community sees this incident as a ‘game of balance’.
Jordan’s neighboring states are Syria and Iraq. Both countries act as proxy forces of Iran. Anyway, a meme of Jordan’s King Abdullah II went viral on social media after Iranian drone strikes were repelled. It shows King Abdullah II strutting around in Israeli military uniform.
Israel-Jordan Relations: A peace treaty was signed between the two countries in 1994. Before that, between 1948 and 1973, Jordan was involved in the war with Israel 4 times. The majority of the country’s population is Palestinian. In 1997, the Mossad attempted to kill a senior Hamas official in Jordan. A Jordanian citizen was shot dead by a security guard at the Israeli embassy. Overall, the general public in Jordan has a negative attitude toward Israel.
Four main issues regarding Israel-Jordan:
Palestine – The Hashemites (Jordanian royal family) consider the Palestinian issue an internal issue. According to them, the two states should solve this problem. But Netanyahu’s recent policies have raised doubts in Jordan. They respect the Abraham Accord. But they think that Israel is not complying with it.
Jerusalem – Jordan has an interest in the Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem. They want full control over the Haram al Sharif or Temple Mount. It is also a major problem for King Abdullah II.
Economy – Jordan hosts 1.5 million refugees from Syria and Iraq. Which is a major threat to the economy and internal security. They are already dealing with water and fuel shortages. Jordan’s long-standing water problem is sought to be resolved within the Israel-Jordan peace agreement. The two countries agreed to share the water of the Yarmouk River. But during the April 2021 drought in Jordan, Netanyahu initially refused to provide additional water.

Security – Jordan and Israel, both countries plagued by threats from radical Islamic groups. Jordan cannot act independently against Iran. As The Jerusalem Strategic Tribune reports, Jordan actively resists efforts to establish an Iranian presence on its soil as an extension of Iranian presence in Syria. Bordering Iraq and Syria, Jordan is also under threat from ISIS.
