Tamluk: Scrub typhus has been prevalent in East Medinipur district for the last few years. The number of people affected by this disease is higher during the rainy season compared to other times of the year. This disease mainly spreads among children. During the rainy season, along with diarrhea, malaria and dengue, many people suffer from scrub typhus.
In the last few years, more than four hundred children in East Medinipur district were affected by this disease. So far this year, two hundred and fifty more children have been affected by this disease. As a result, the district health department is more alert about this disease along with dengue and malaria.
Scrub typhus is basically a disease caused by scabies. A type of insect called ‘Trombiculid mite’ is responsible for this disease. After four to five days of the disease, various types of symptoms including fever appear. The incidence of this disease increases during the rainy season.
During the rainy season, the number of plants and bushes increases. Therefore there is a risk of scrub typhus. Scrub typhus disease causes multiple symptoms including high fever, pain all over the body, pain, vomiting and nausea. Apart from this, round spots like cigarette burns are seen on the body of the affected person where he has smoked.
Children suffering from scrub typhus need prompt treatment. Since the impact of this disease is more in East Medinipur district, the health department has taken several precautionary measures along with dengue malaria to prevent it from spreading rapidly during the rainy season. The health department has launched cautionary campaigns on how to keep children away from this disease. Along with this, health workers are going door to door and talking.

Regarding this matter, East Medinipur district health officer, physician Bibhas Rai said, ‘Children can be easily protected from getting infected with the disease scrub typhus. The surroundings of the house must be kept clean. It is absolutely not necessary to sleep without urine at night. Apart from this, children will have to wear full-length clothes and pants at all times. If children notice any of the typical symptoms of this disease including fever, they are advised to immediately consult doctors at a hospital or nearby health centre. It is known from the Delhi Health Department that this year scrub typhus is under control to some extent as compared to last year.
