Nowadays almost all people are running after AC to maintain a comfortable indoor environment in summer. But finding the right AC for your home, be it home or office, is a tough task. While buying an AC for your home, you hear about various features like single-slit, multi-split, ducted etc.
However, while buying an AC, you must keep BTUs in mind. BTU or British Therm Unit is the unit that measures the cooling capacity of an AC. It indicates the amount of energy used to cool an area in one hour.
But BTU is a very small unit which is measured in thousands. Hence tons are used as a large measure of the ‘cooling capacity’ of an air conditioner. One ton of ‘cooling’ is equivalent to about 12,000 BTUs.

How AC for which room:
AC requires 20 BTUs per square foot. The height of the house will be added to it. So the simple formula for calculating BTUs is 20 BTUs x 1 square foot. Let’s say a 600 square foot room with an 8 foot ceiling would require 12,000 BTUs to cool. But the spatial climate of that room is also a big issue. A two-bedroom apartment of 800 square feet in the same area would require 16,000 BTUs to cool. A 1200 square foot house will require 24000 BTUs.

What happens if the BTU is too low?
If the BTUs are low, the air conditioner will always run at its maximum power. But even that will not match the desired comfort.
Air conditioners with very high BTUs are also not good in all cases. In that case the room will cool down very quickly and the AC will stop its cycle. Then the AC should run again. It will increase electricity consumption.
Other considerations:
AC should be purchased based on the number, size and amount of sunlight entering a room’s windows. Open fair, rooms full of natural light require more powerful AC.
The location of the house is also important. Generally east-facing houses get more sunlight in the morning. West facing house after afternoon.
Relative humidity is also a big factor. ACs with ‘dry mode function’ feature should be purchased in humid environments.
insulation A building’s insulation is critical to air conditioning and heating performance. A properly insulated room will keep cold air in and heat out. As a first step, check your doors and windows for any gaps that allow cool air to escape.
Care should also be taken to ensure that the cold air inside the house does not escape.
