After the coup in Bangladesh, now the Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan has resigned from his post. Actually Obaidul Hasan had called a meeting of all the judges today without consulting the newly formed interim government. The protesters opposed this and surrounded the Supreme Court today and insisted on the demand for resignation. One hour was given to resign.
According to the ‘Daily Star’ report, the Chief Justice told reporters at the Supreme Court premises that he has decided to resign keeping in mind the safety of judges of the Supreme Court, High Court and lower courts across the country amid changing circumstances. Obaidul Hasan was appointed the head of the Supreme Court last year and is considered a loyalist of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to media reports, several incidents of persecution of minority communities have been reported in 52 districts of Bangladesh since the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5. At least 450 people have been killed in protests that have lasted for more than a month in Bangladesh. Incidents of violence against minorities have increased after the coup in Bangladesh. The Indian government has expressed concern over the increasing violent incidents against minorities and has also contacted the Prime Minister of the interim government of Bangladesh and urged to ensure the safety of minorities.
